Pearl River hits the road for the first time against Coahoma

The Pearl River football team will hit the road for the first time this season Thursday, taking on Coahoma. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.

The Wildcats (0-1 overall) fell in their home opener against Mississippi Delta, 31-6.

“We’re going to do everything in our power to ensure that the product on the field this week is corrected,” head coach Seth Smith said. “The expectation for our guys this week is not to worry about the opponent but worry about ourselves. If we play to our level and execute, the opponent will not matter.”

LEADERS
Bryce Wallace (Pulaski, Tenn.; Giles County) threw for 229 yards and ran for 48 yards in his Wildcat debut.

Tavion Smith (Hattiesburg; Oak Grove) was Wallace’s main target, hauling in seven passes for 103 yards.

Tony Brown (Hurley; East Central) carried the football 12 times for 40 yards and a touchdown.

Noah Mitchell (Leakesville; Greene County) tallied seven solo tackles, two assisted tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and one sack in the season opener.

SCOUTING COAHOMA
Coahoma (1-0) is fresh off an upset victory over No. 13 Hinds, winning 21-14.

Starting quarterback Kennique Bonner-Steward completed 14 passes for 152 yards and a touchdown.

Jakobi Jackson tallied 22 carries for 90 yards and a touchdown.

The Tiger’s leading receiver Leroy Holingshed caught three passes for 83 yards.

“Coahoma is a really good team,” Smith said. “They’re going to be confident coming off the win against Hinds. We are expecting a tough opponent who is riding high. We want to go there and play to our best ability, something we did not do last week.”

PRCC-CCC SERIES
Pearl River holds a 19-1 all-time record against Coahoma, according to PRCC records. The Wildcats claimed the last matchup in 2015 by a score of 32-6.
