Fair midway tickets

Magee Financial offices and other businesses will be selling Washington Parish Fair midway tickets during regular business hours from now until Tuesday, Oct. 19. Magee Financial offices are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. The cost of the advance sale tickets is $25 for a sheet of 40 tickets, and only cash will be accepted. The cost for single tickets bought on the midway during the fair will be $1 each, or $27 for a sheet of 30 tickets. Armbands and rodeo tickets will not be part of this advance sale. Locations selling the advance midway tickets include: Bogalusa — Magee Financial, Hancock Whitney Bank and Nielsen’s City Drug Store; Franklinton — Magee Financial, Parish Credit and Hancock Whitney Bank; Kentwood ­— Magee Financial; and Covington — Magee Financial.

 

Events at the Bogalusa branch library

• On Thursday, Oct. 7, the library will have a “Medicare Information Table.” Licensed Medicare consultant Anissa Culbertson will be on hand to distribute information about Medicare and to answer questions.
• Fair week schedule at the library — Monday, Oct. 18, through Tuesday, Oct. 19, the library will be open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. The library will be closed Wednesday, Oct. 20, and Saturday, Oct. 23. Thursday, Oct. 21, through Friday, Oct. 22, the library will be open from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.
• Because of COVID-19, the “Lawyers in Libraries” will be done by phone. Anyone interested in getting legal advice concerning a civil matter (no criminal matters) can call or come by the library beginning Monday, Oct. 4, through Monday, Oct. 18, to sign up for a phone conference with an attorney. The conferences will be from Monday, Oct. 25, through Saturday, Oct. 30.
• Check out the library’s Facebook page, “Bogalusa Branch Library,” for virtual Story Time with Jennifer Seals and for information about all the fun activities planned for kids.
• Patrons can now check out hotspots for seven days with current photo ID. Must have been a patron for at least 90 days, with an account in good standing. Coming soon are laptops, iPads and tablets for check out. The same requirements will apply.
• Patrons can take care of overdue fines with non-perishable items through the “Food for Fines” program. One item covers $3 in fines.
• “Tech Time” is every Thursday from noon until 1 p.m. Get help with your tech and device issues. Call for an appointment, which are from noon until 12:45 p.m.

 

Washington Parish Republican Women

On Wednesday, Oct. 13, the Washington Parish Republican Women will be hosting a fund-raiser luncheon at the ESM United Methodist Church, located at 510 Ave. B, from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Tickets may be purchased from any club member for $10, or at the door. A silent auction will be held.

 

Downtown Street Festival

The Downtown Street Festival presented by the Bogalusa Historic Cultural District will be Saturday, Oct. 16, from 3 p.m. until 10 p.m. The event will feature live music, Louisiana cuisine, artisan vendors, an antique car show presented by Open Road Cruisers, a silent art auction at Riverstone Gallery, and art contests hosted by the YMCA. Mike Shepherd, president of the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame, will serve as emcee for the event. Bring a lawn chair to the grassy lawn in front of The Daily News to enjoy this benefit concert free to the public. Scheduled acts in the music line-up include Randy Jackson of Zebra, A Tribute to Led Zeppelin; The Chad Harry Experience; The Rezonators; Claire Kellar; and a street performance by saxophonist Steve Burke. Prevention on the Go

The Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, in partnership with Woman’s Hospital in Baton Rouge, will host “Prevention on the Go” breast and colorectal cancer screenings on Thursday, Oct. 28, at Nielsen’s Pharmacy, located at 1619 S. Columbia St. in Bogalusa. Masks are required and the clinic will be open from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. — appointments are required. For more information, call 985-287-5775.

 

Ask a Lawyer

Discuss your legal concerns with a lawyer for free on Thursday, Oct. 28, from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. at the Franklinton Branch Library. Get answers to your questions about bankruptcy, civil lawsuits, collection matters, custody, divorce, evictions, FEMA/disaster benefits, food stamps, foreclosures, housing, Medicaid, Social Security, SSI/SSDI, successions, taxes and wills. October Fest

Pastor Wesley Quave and the New Life U.P.C. congregation at 1600 Jefferson St. in Bogalusa will be holding an October Fest on Saturday, Oct. 30, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Lots of fun activities for children will be available, as well as cake walks, jump houses, putt-putt golf and a general store with lots of goodies. Come join us for some friendly, fall fellowship.

 

4-H enrollment now open

Washington Parish 4-H enrollment is now open online. Use the link, https://v2.4honline.com. Each family will only need one account to register all youth and adults who want to volunteer. Washington has been chosen as 1 of 17 parishes in the state to pilot this new registration system. So, while things make look a little different, we no longer have to worry about those paper copies being lost between school and home. All fees will be paid at school, as in the past. 4-H is offered in every public and private school in our parish, along with the Clover Explorers Homeschool Club.
