Southern Miss football coach Will Hall announced Wednesday the hiring of Sam Gregg as offensive coordinator/offensive line coach for the 2022 season.
Gregg comes to Southern Miss after spending the last three years at Liberty University where he served as offensive line coach.
“We are very excited to get Sam Gregg with us at Southern Miss,” said Hall. “Sam is widely regarded in this profession as one of the top offensive line coaches in this country. He has helped build great offenses everywhere he has been. We have broken many school records together in our past. Sam is a great person, husband, and father. Better days are ahead for this football program. Sam will only help us get there faster!”
During his time at Liberty, he helped a Flames club rank in the Top 50 nationally in total offense, including a No. 15 ranking following the 2020 campaign. Liberty compiled three winning seasons and will be making their third consecutive bowl trip later this month at the LendingTree Bowl in Mobile, Ala., with a 7-5 record.
The Flames collected a 10-1 record and a No. 17 ranking by the Associated Press in 2020. In his first two seasons, he had four different linemen earn All-Independent teams by Phil Steele Magazine, including (Dontae Duff in 2019 and Cooper McCaw, Brendan Schlittler and Thomas Sargeant in 2020).
Duff, who started 47 career games and played every position on the offensive line during his career, was a four-time honoree on the VaSID all-state team. Sargeant, who has started 59 consecutive games at center for Liberty, was named to the 2020 Rimington Trophy Award Watch List (top FBS center in the country).
Gregg’s offensive line helped quarterback Stephen Calvert finish his career as the program’s all-time career leader in passing yards (12,025) and touchdowns (93) in 2019, before guarding current outstanding Flames signal caller Malik Willis.
Before Liberty, Gregg spent the previous five seasons (2014-18) as the offensive coordinator at West Georgia, helping West Georgia to four NCAA Division II playoff appearances (2014, 2015, 2017 and 2018), back-to-back 12-win seasons, two NCAA Division II Super Region 2 titles (2014 and 2015) and a Gulf South Conference crown in 2015.
Prior to his time at UWG, Gregg spent six seasons at West Alabama (2008-13), starting as an offensive line coach before he was promoted to offensive coordinator. Gregg was on the staff with Hall all six seasons at UWA and three years together at UWG.
During his seven seasons as an offensive coordinator in the Gulf South Conference at West Georgia and West Alabama, Gregg helped produce 48 all-conference players. This number included a pair of All-America linemen in center Harley Vaughan and tackle Austin Kastl.
During his coaching career, Gregg has coached 17 All-Americans (11 offensive linemen, four running backs and two tight ends).
Gregg, who is a 2002 graduate of Murray State, started his coaching career as a defensive line coach at Itawamba Community College (2003), Southwest Baptist (2005-06) and Arkansas – Monticello (2007) and as a graduate assistant at Memphis (2004).
