Southern Miss sophomore Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand) shot a 73 and then followed with a team-low 69 over the final day of the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate to finish tied for seventh, while the Golden Eagles placed eighth in the team event Tuesday in Mobile, Ala.
The eighth-place showing for the Golden Eagles came after firing a four-over 292 second round, which was completed after the round was postponed from Monday due to darkness, before shooting a final-round 289 to end the event with an 869 team score.
“This week was not our ‘A’ game,” said Southern Miss men’s golf coach Eddie Brescher. “We played the tough holes well. Being in the top three teams for par three and four performance is great. However, our par five performance is what held us back this week.”
Rattanayanon enjoyed his 12th par or below round over the final 18 holes with a team tournament-low round of 69 as he finished with a four-under 212.
“A big shoutout to Thongpipat for leading our team this week,” said Brescher of his player that turned in his eighth career Top 20 finish. “Not the longest hitter, but he is one of the best players in the nation inside of 150 yards. And he continues to prove that with how many top 20 finishes he has in his career.
“Also hats off to Robbie (Latter) for his solid play this week. He continues to show his talent when it’s game time.”
Latter, the sophomore from Mississauga, Ontario, finished his second round with a 70 and then shot a 74 for a one-under par 215 to end the event in an 18th-place tie.
Senior Brice Wilkinson (Madison, Miss.) added rounds of 74 and 75 to end the event with a 220 and a 41st-place tie, while senior Hunter Atkins (West Point, Miss.) collected a 76 and a 71 for a 223 and a 51st-place tie. Sophomore Bennett Rudy (Waterloo, Ontario) carded rounds of 75 and 78 to round out the Golden Eagle scoring with a 229 and a 69th-place tie.
The Golden Eagles return to action when they travel Auburn, Ala., March 6-8, at the Dufner-Tiger Invitational.
