NEW ORLEANS – Following weekend series victories, Georgia Southern’s Ben Johnson and Old Dominion’s Hunter Fitz-Gerald earned Sun Belt baseball weekly accolades.
Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Ben Johnson, Georgia Southern
(Jr., RHP – Tucker, Ga.)
Eagles junior right-handed pitcher Ben Johnson tossed 7.0 innings of one-hit baseball en route to a 9-0 series clinching win for Georgia Southern. The Tucker, Ga., native struck out a career-high nine, while facing the minimum in 6-of-7 innings pitched. The junior held opposing hitters to a .045 batting average to notch his second win of the season and drop his ERA to 0.75.
Baseball Player of the Week
Hunter Fitz-Gerald, Old Dominion
(Jr., INF – Margate, Fla.)
Monarchs junior infielder Hunter Fitz-Gerald hit .444 (12-for-27) and slugged .889 to propel Old Dominion to a 5-0 week. The Margate, Fla., product amassed 24 total bases and 11 RBI, while posting three doubles, three home runs and eight runs scored. Fitz-Gerald opened the week with his best performance—a 5-for-6 outing against VMI with a double, a home run, four runs scored and four RBI.
