Varnado’s Wiggins qualifies for regionals

Varnado’s Gabrielle Wiggins qualified for regionals in the long jump at the District 10-1A Meet that was held on Wednesday at Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans.
Wiggins came in second in the long jump with a distance of 14 feet, 9.5 inches. Cohen College Prep’s Mikiah Williams won at 21-4.
Wednesday’s meet was a qualifier. The top four from each event are headed to regionals. Regionals will be held on April 25 at Ponchatoula.
Several more athletes competed for Varnado.
The school’s 4×100 relay team came in fifth with a time of 1 minute, 1 second. The team included Wiggins, Shunti Williams, Naya Bell and Tyrihana Bell. Louise S. McGehee won in 50.69 seconds.
Varnado’s 4×200 relay team was seventh with a time of 2:15. The group had Williams, Jamya Bell, Naya Bell and Tyrihana Bell. Louise S. McGehee won in 1:44.
Jamya Bell was eighth in the 400 in 1:17. Louise S. McGehee’s Nadia Jones won in 1:03.
Wiggins and Naya Bell ran eighth and 10th in the 100 with times of 14.43 and 14.49. Louise S. McGehee’s Kali Magana won in 12.44.
Tyrihana Bell was ninth in the 200 at 33.51, as Magana won in 25.44.
Skyler Magee came in ninth in the shot put with a distance of 21-0. West St. John’s Kharma Creecy won at 30-2.5.
