WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) announced that Louisiana will receive a total of $4,573,498.00 in Flood Mitigation Assistance grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The funding will be delivered through Swift Current initiative grants, which expedite flood mitigation grant applications for communities after a natural disaster.

“Flood mitigation assistance grants make our communities more resilient and prepared for the next storm,” said Dr. Cassidy. “Louisiana families deserve the peace of mind in knowing their risk of flooding is greatly reduced or gone altogether.”

The City of New Orleans will receive $3,029,325.00 to fund the elevation of 15 structures and St. John the Baptist Parish will receive $1,544,173.00 to fund the elevation of 10 substantially damaged severe repetitive loss properties.

Cassidy worked to secure $3.5 billion in Flood Mitigation Assistance grants in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. This funding was included to reduce or eliminate the risk of repetitive flood damage to buildings insured by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). In fiscal year 2020, one-third of applications for this program came from Louisiana. Louisiana can expect to receive further flood mitigation funding from IIJA over the next three years.
