BOGALUSA, La. – The YMCA hosted an eclipse event on a beautiful day, where the community members were invited to witness the rare astronomical event, last seen in 2017. The event was organized by YMCA’s CEO Toni StPhilip, Robotics Director George Corkern, and two youth facilitators, Tyler Williams and Jodie Knight, trained by NASA professionals from John C. Stennis Space Center to host the event successfully.

The participants were introduced to engineering and science through various activities, including rocket-building, using an end effector to pick up full water bottles and learning the principles of flight. The event was designed to provide a safe and secure environment for the participants to view the eclipse. Extra glasses were provided to the library, Cassidy Park, and individuals advertising their candidates for the election that same day. A total of 180 pairs of glasses were distributed.

The children’s joy and amazement were evident as they witnessed the eclipse for the first time. George Corkern, Robotics Director, expressed his delight at the successful event and the opportunity for the community to experience the eclipse in a safe and secure environment. 

“We care about our city and the people who live here, not only those who come to the Y. Everyone deserves a chance to see the wonders of what God created in safety and the company of family and friends,” said CEO Toni StPhilip.
