Survivors of sexual abuse in Washington Parish will soon have access to more support services, thanks to a $75,000 state appropriation awarded to the parish government.
In collaboration with the Southeast Louisiana Pregnancy Center for Women and Children, the parish plans to expand outreach and care for residents recovering from abuse, particularly in underserved, rural areas where resources are often hard to come by.
Parish officials say the funding marks a step forward in addressing a difficult but critical issue.
“We’re committed to standing with our neighbors in need,” the statement read. “These funds will help ensure survivors aren’t alone in their journey toward healing.”
The Southeast Louisiana Pregnancy Center, a nonprofit located in Bogalusa, has long served as a lifeline for women, children and families in crisis. The faith-based organization offers a wide range of no-cost services for expectant mothers and parents of young children.
The center provides everything from free pregnancy testing and maternity clothes to children’s clothing, car seats, and cribs. It also runs the “Cribs for Kids” safe sleep program and is preparing to offer on-site ultrasounds for expectant mothers.
Parenting classes, pregnancy education, and referrals for nurse-family partnerships are part of the center’s approach, as is helping families connect to WIC and Medicaid services.
The center also offers faith-based guidance, with a focus on promoting self-worth, offering compassion to those who’ve experienced abortion, and sharing the gospel for those who seek spiritual support.
