The Franklinton Mayor and Board of Aldermen met on Tuesday, July 22, to address a range of topics including youth recreation, budget amendments, and upcoming community events. The meeting highlighted several initiatives aimed at enhancing the town’s quality of life and supporting local programs.
At the beginning of the meeting, there was an extended discussion about the public speaking decorum rules that were introduced at the last meeting. While some attendees supported the rules, others expressed concerns. Alderwoman Paula Crain reminded everyone that the meetings are held under the Town of Franklinton’s Charter, and emphasized that the meetings are not just for the mayor’s agenda, but for the Board of Aldermen and the public.
Crain voiced her belief that the rules-meant to encourage respectful and orderly public comments-should have been introduced to the board in advance. It was noted, however, that these rules were first presented back in January. Board members agreed they do not want the public to feel threatened or discouraged from participating, and asked that all who speak at meetings do so in a kind, professional, and respectful manner.
The board voted unanimously to authorize Mayor Darwin Sharp to sign a contract with Safe Haven for the installation of a Safe Haven Baby Box. The box, which will be installed in partnership with the fire department, provides a secure, anonymous option for parents in crisis to legally surrender an infant, supporting both child welfare and public safety.
Community involvement was a key theme of the evening. A representative for the Krewe of Odysseus addressed the board and spoke about the organizations upcoming plans. The newly formed Odysseus Parade will be the first night parade in Washington Parish for Mardi Gras and will roll two Fridays before Fat Tuesday. Jennifer Jackson and other former members of the Franklinton Football and Cheer Association. They spoke passionately about the program’s impact on local youth, emphasizing the life skills it teaches-including accountability, teamwork, responsibility, and confidence.
“This is about investing in our children,” said Cheyenne Burns, adding that essential items such as uniforms, equipment, and other basic needs must be met to give participants the opportunity they deserve.
In response, the board approved a budget amendment for the economic development recreation fund and authorized up to $5,100 in purchases for the association.
Before adjourning a reminder was issued about the upcoming School Supply Giveaway scheduled for Thursday, August 1, from 5 to 6 p.m. Students must be present in order to receive supplies.
