Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May, is a solemn national holiday dedicated to honoring the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. It’s a time for communities across America to come together in remembrance, reflection, and gratitude.

As we approach this important day, let us take a moment to honor the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Their courage, selflessness, and dedication to our nation live on in our hearts and within our communities.

This year, several local events are planned to commemorate Memorial Day. These gatherings provide meaningful opportunities to reflect on the service and sacrifice of our fallen heroes and to show support for our veterans and their families.

Varnado Store Museum and the American Legion Post 24 will commemorate Memorial Day with a program on the street beside the museum at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 25th in Franklinton. There will be a prayer, music, address and a 3-volley salute, as well as, the playing of taps.

This annual program reminds us of the sacrifices of many Americans in the guarding of our freedom.

American Legion Memorial Day Program

Monday, May 26th at 10:00 a.m.

The American Legion will host its annual Memorial Day program at the New Veteran’s Cemetery. The keynote speaker will be Pastor Derek Dantin, a U.S. Air Force veteran who served from 2002 to 2008 as a crew chief on F-16 and F-15 fighter jets.

Pastor Dantin brings not only his military background but also a wealth of leadership and service to the community. He has pastored Oak Grove Baptist Church in Franklinton for 19 years, coached youth basketball at Ben’s Ford Christian School, and served on numerous local boards and committees. He and his wife, Laura, have been married for 20 years and are the proud parents of eight children.

Attendees can expect an inspiring and meaningful message from Pastor Dantin as we remember those who have given everything for our country.

Let us gather together this Memorial Day to honor the legacy of our fallen heroes. Through remembrance, we ensure that their sacrifices are never forgotten. We hope to see you at one or more of these special events.
