Bowling Green gets a tough test tonight, traveling to face undefeated Centreville in a District 6AA contest.

Bowling Green begins the day with a 1-5 overall record and the Buccaneers have lost their only league contest.

The Bucs enter after a 41-6 loss against Trinity Episcopal Day School.

It’s been a struggle this season for Bowling Green. The most points the team has scored is 15 and have been limited to single-digit point totals four times this year.

The team has also given up 29 or more points five times.

Bowling Green coach David Currier said he’s seeing some improvement in his club. “We’re getting more physical,” Currier said. “We just have trouble in space with speed. We haven’t been as fleet footed.”

The team is battling some injuries. Connor McCain and Seth Schillings are both out with shoulder injuries and quarterback Brady Goings is questionable.

If Goings can’t play, then Jace Ball will handle the quarterback duties.

Ball saw time as the signal caller last week and Currier said he did OK.

“He managed the offense some,” Currier said. “He’s hasn’t played a lot of quarterback.”

Ball scored the team’s only touchdown on a 4-yard run.

McCain ran for 67 yards on nine carries last week, while McCain had 58 yards on 11 attempts.

Brock Faust led the team defensively with eight tackles.

Centreville, the Class AA state runner-up last season, is 6-0 overall and 2-0 district play. The Fighting Tigers are ranked No. 1 in the Southern Sports & Travel Poll.

Centreville has proven to be a tough team all season. The Fighting Tigers have won every game by at least 12 points. Centreville has scored 42 points in every game except for last week when the team shut out Silliman Institute 23-0.

The team has also been strong defensively, limiting four teams to 15 or fewer points.

“We’ve got a great group of seniors,” offensive coordinator Brian Stutzman said. “They’ve played together for three years and they’ve led the team well. We just hope to continue our streak.”

Quarterback Casey Haygood, a three-year starter, has thrown for 710 yards with six touchdowns and two interceptions.

Running back Chase Hughes enters with 372 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns, and is the leading receiver with nine catches for 216 yards and two scores.

John Marcus McDowell has 321 yards rushing with six tallies.

Wide receiver Jordan Clark begins the game with seven catches for 120 yards.

Centreville will be without two receivers in Tyler Caston and Daniel Hollingsworth.

Caston is out with a sprained ankle. He’s got eight catches for 191 yards and three TDs.

Hollingsworth, who has a concussion, has caught nine passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns.

Centreville run a 4-3 defense.

Its top players are linemen Matt Darden and Brian Arnett, linebackers Parker Doughty and Sean Perry, free safeties McDowell, and David Carmichael, along with strong safety Clark.
