Franklinton’s Kalib Travis signed a football scholarship to Tyler Junior College recently.
The Demons, under coach Shane Smith, have advanced to the postseason in each of Travis’ four years in the program winning the LHSAA Class 4A state championship in 2010.
“It just goes to show you that if you keep plugging away, good things will happen,” Smith said. “To get an opportunity to play at the next level was all that Kalib was looking for.
“He worked hard for it and as a coaching staff we are happy for him. We worked him at various positions throughout his career. He is just an unselfish young man that suffered a tough injury to end his senior season but he fought through it and got back on his feet.”
Travis choose the Apaches after a visit and offer following participation in the 10th Annual Bayou Bowl in Baytown, Texas in June. Tyler Junior College is a two-year community college located in Tyler, Texas. The Apaches participate in NJCAA in the Southwest Junior College Football Conference under coach Danny Palmer.
“This is my dream and it finally came true,” Travis said. “I get the opportunity to prove that I can play at the next level. Hopefully, I can do good things and display my talents to the fullest”
Travis, the District 7-4A Defensive MVP and All-State selection, registered 60 tackles for the Demons last season at middle linebacker before breaking his leg in the regular season finale. An offensive lineman on the state title team, Travis also worked on the defensive line, fullback, tight end and quarterback.
“It helps me read the offense better by playing all those positions,” Travis said. “I am just going to go up there and work as hard as I ever have and do whatever they ask of me.”
Travis is the son of Jeffery and Lori Travis.
