Bogalusa had a tough game against Chalmette at St. Paul’s School on Tuesday, but rebounded in the second game and was victorious over Bay High out of Bay St. Louis, Miss. in the Mandeville Summer Basketball League.

Bogalusa lost the first game, 89-31, to Chalmette, which seemed to be clicking on all cylinders. The Owls hit 15 shots from 3-point range. Chalmette’s first 15 points came on 3-pointers.

The Lumberjacks kept it close early on and trailed 9-6 with 13:36 remaining in the first half.

Bogalusa’s D’Angelo Mark, who scored seven points, tallied the game’s first points with a fast break layup.

Chalmette hit a pair of threes to go up 6-2 before Sheldon Smith passed to Timaja Peyton for two and it was 6-4 with 14:27 left.

The Owls hit a three, but Mark trimmed the lead back to three with a driving layup.

It was a 9-6 game with 13:36 left in the first half.

The Owls extended the lead to 21-10 with 9:21 on the clock.

But Chalmette was very active defensively, which helped the Owls force turnovers and that created easy buckets on the offensive end.

The Owls led 50-13 at halftime and won the second half 39-18.

“We need to just get it together as a team,” Bogalusa coach Ken Matthews said after the first game. “We’ve got to do a better job of believing in ourselves. We’ve got people depending on us and we’ve got to do what we’ve got to do as a team. We’ve got things we just need to clean up.”

Billy Mingo scored 11 points to lead Bogalusa. Tramarcus Levi and Jalen Brickmore had four apiece. Charles Allen finished with three and Peyton added two.

Things were a lot better for the Lumberjacks in the second game, as the Lumberjacks defeated Bay High, 39-38, in overtime.

“The returning starters really stepped up,” Matthews said when talking about the game against Bay High. “During the game they trusted the younger players and tried to get them more involved. At the end, they took the game on their shoulders and helped us secure the victory.”

Bogalusa trailed 22-19 at halftime, but came back in the second half and tied the game at 38-38 through regulation.

The game went to overtime. In this league, first one to score in OT wins.

Mingo was good on a free throw in overtime, helping the Lumberjacks capture the victory.

Matthews talked about the difference in the two games.

“More defense was played,” Matthews said. “It wasn’t a high-scoring game. We leaned more on defense the second game.”

Levi led the way with 15 points. Laster Hills posted 13 and Mingo finished with 11.

Bogalusa is back in action Tuesday at St. Paul’s with games scheduled against Gulfport and Pearl River beginning at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. respectively.

Teams in the league play a pair of 20-minute halves with a running clock until the 1-minute mark of each half. At that point, the clock stops on every whistle and each team gets one timeout per half.
