Varnado’s Wildcats were victorious, 14-6, over Springfield at the North Oaks Jamboree on Friday at Ponchatoula High School.
The event featured a pair of 12-minute halves.
“We came out and jumped on them early,” Varnado coach Scott Shaffett said. “We put up two scores pretty quickly. We shut them down in the first half. I think we limited them to just two first downs.
“We played a very good half on offense, defense and special teams. We kept them out of the end zone. We had a couple of turnovers early in the game that we’ve got to fix. They had a couple of turnovers, but the difference was that we capitalized on their turnovers.”
The Wildcats’ first touchdown came on Jadarrell Magee’s 3-yard run. The two-point conversion was no good, keeping it at 6-0.
Varnado added to its lead when Desmond Harry ran 15 yards to make it 12-0. Armontee Kemp ran for two points to put the Wildcats ahead 14-0.
Varnado’s defense held Springfield off the scoreboard until the 2:10 mark of the second half.
The Bulldogs then attempted an onside kick. Varnado recovered it and drove to the 1 before taking a knee to run out the clock and seal the victory.
Varnado opens the season Friday at home with a contest against St. Patrick Catholic of Biloxi, Miss.
