Varnado’s Wildcats take to the road tonight, as they head to South Plaquemines to face the Hurricanes.

“They’re South Plaquemines. The name says it all,” Varnado coach Scott Shaffett said. “They’re a traditional playoff team. They’re good and athletic, but we’re coming off our best game of the year. You play a team like South Plaquemines — you have to play for four quarters and see where you stand. Overall this year, I think we’re playing good football except for about one quarter.”

That “one quarter” was the opening period against Berwick two weeks ago, when the Wildcats gave up 22 points in a 30-23 loss.

Varnado enters this week with a 2-2 record. The Wildcats were victorious over Catholic of Pointe Coupee, 34-12, last week.

The Wildcats’ five touchdowns came on the ground last week.

Jadarrell Magee ran for two touchdowns. Armontee Kemp, Jacorius Bickham and Desmond Harry had one each.

“I think our offense played a lot better in the second half last week,” Shaffett said. “We put points on the board and that is what we need to continue doing.”

Varnado scored 28 points in the second half after the teams played to a 6-6 tie in the first half.

Defensively, Errol Varnado intercepted a pass for the Wildcats.

“He’s had interceptions the last couple of ballgames where he’s put us in scoring position or he’s scored,” Shaffett said.

Also forcing a turnover was Kemp, when he recovered a fumble.

This is Varnado’s final non-district game of the 2016 regular season. The Wildcats have a bye next week, followed by four District 8-1A games.

South Plaquemines won last year’s game 50-9, after outscoring Varnado 30-0 in the second half.

First-year coach Ferrante Dominique said this is an important week for his team.

“We play a tough pre-district schedule,” Dominique said. “We’ve come out of it 2-2 so far. We’re playing against a very good Varnado team. They’re well coached. They’re 1A, we’re 2A. I think South Plaquemines used to be in the same district as them. I think we’re only 2A by a couple of numbers, so it should be a good ballgame.”

Drew Sanger is the quarterback. He has been the quarterback in the past, but played wide receiver last year and part of this year. He became the starter for their week three game against H.L. Bourgeois, but finished games as the signal caller the first two weeks.

Dominique said Sanger has emerged as the team leader.

Last week, Sanger ran for 125 and he threw two touchdowns.

The running back is Micah Ancar. Dominique said Ancar is learning how to run between the tackles.

The wide receivers are Elijah Bourgeois, Corey Rojas, Truce Williams and Kendrick Smith. All of the receivers have touchdowns. Dominique said the team has more passing touchdowns and than rushing scores.

The top defenders are middle linebackers Smith and Trey Ockman.
