Today is the start of several days that some shoppers wait for all year.

Those who are buying back-to-school supplies, electronics, and even appliances and many other retail purchases, will get a break on state sales taxes Friday and Saturday, when the normally 5-percent tax will be reduced to 3 percent. The exemption applies to the first $2,500 of the purchase price of the eligible items.

Gayle Snyder, who was gathering school supplies Thursday with Chandler Snyder, 13, said she knew the tax discount days were coming, but wanted to get her shopping done early to avoid the crowds.

“I don’t want to have to fight the crowd (for the sales tax discount days),” Snyder said. “I’d rather spend a few extra dollars. My daughter will be out tomorrow.”

The reduction applies only to the state sales tax. It does not apply to vehicles subject to title and license; meals prepared for consumption on the premises or to go; or taxable services such as hotel occupancy. It also does not apply to rentals, leases, or admission to recreational facilities and events.

The Louisiana Department of Revenue reminds shoppers to keep the receipts for back-to-school items, such as supplies, uniforms, and equipment required by the schools, because the purchases could qualify for tax deductions next year.
