Voters in Louisiana will determine who will be their next state treasurer, in the runoff election scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 18.

Polls open at 7 a.m. and will close at 8 p.m.

The sole major race on the ballot is to decide who will succeed John N. Kennedy as the state’s treasurer, after Kennedy left to join the U.S. Senate. The candidates are John Schroder of the Republican Party, and Derrick Edwards of the Democratic Party. Schroder is a former member of the State House of Representatives from Covington, and Edwards is an attorney from New Orleans.

The candidates qualified for the election by finishing as the top two vote getters in the primary election in October. Edwards led with 31 percent and Schroder had 24 percent — Edwards was the only Democratic Party candidate on the ballot. There were six candidates in the primary election.

Ron Henson has been serving as the interim treasurer since Kennedy joined the Senate.

Some of the duties of the treasurer include monitoring the state’s investments, ensuring the governor’s office has enough cash to pay the state’s bills, and helping to approve construction projects in the state.

Also, voters in the Bogalusa City Schools district will decide on whether to continue three millages. None of the millage propositions are new taxes, but are simply continuations of existing taxes.

If passed, the millages will continue for another 10 years.

Voters are reminded to bring a photo ID.
