Beginning tomorrow, athletes from the parish will be vying for state championships in track and field across various events.
Reaching state is a two-step process.
LHSAA athletes had to come in the top four in their events at the district meet, which mean they qualified for regionals, and then they had to finish in the top three at regionals to make it to state.
In MAIS, the athletes had to come in the top four in district to reach South State, and then the top four made it to state.
The LHSAA state meet takes place Thursday-Saturday at Bernie Moore Stadium, which is on the campus of LSU.
Classes B and C take place tomorrow while 1A and 2A are Friday and 3A-5A are being held on Saturday.
Three individuals and a relay team are headed to state for Mt. Hermon, which is a Class B school.
In the boys, Za’byeaus Holmes reached state in the 400 meters and the Yellow Jackets have a 4×100 team competing.
Two individuals are going to state for Mt. Hermon’s girls.
Amuriel Williams is running the 100 and Sikoya Jackson qualified for the triple jump.
On Friday, several Varnado athletes and a Pine athlete will be going for state titles in Class 1A.
In the boys, Varnado’s Armontee Kemp made it in the high jump and 110-meter hurdles.
Teammates Darian Vargas and James Williams are going to be throwing the javelin.
The Wildcats also have their 4×100 relay team running.
In the girls, Jalisia Jackson is running the 300 hurdles. Quierra Bickham is long jumping and Jaden Foster is throwing the javelin.
In Class 2A, Pine’s Markell Cotton is going to be long jumping.
Bogalusa, which is in Class 3A, had one athlete reach state in Clydeterrious Thompson. He is running the 400.
The MAIS Meet will be taking place Friday and Saturday at Jackson Academy and Jackson Preparatory School.
The field events and the 3,200 are Friday at Jackson Academy while the rest of the track events are Saturday at Jackson Preparatory School.
One local athlete is headed to state.
Bowling Green School’s Landry Dupont will be long jumping in the Class AAA Meet.
