The B.C. Lions made a 17-point comeback in a 20-17 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at home in Canadian Football League action on Saturday.
Winnipeg jumped out to a 17-0 lead with 8:56 to go in the first half, but B.C.’s defense stepped up from that point on and did not allow Winnipeg to score again.
The game remained 17-0 through halftime.
The Lions got on the board late in the third quarter when Cody Fajardo scored on a quarterback sneak and Ty Long hit the extra point, trimming the deficit to 17-7, and it stayed that way until the fourth quarter.
Long got the lead down to seven with a 46-yard field goal at the 13:16 mark.
B.C. posted the game-tying score when Travis Lulay hit Shaquille Johnson on a 13-yard pass and Long added the extra point.
B.C.’s Anthony Orange intercepted a pass with 1:39 left at Winnipeg’s 46. From there, B.C. drove to the 9 and Long hit a 16-yard field goal with 11 seconds left to seal the victory.
Otha Foster III, who is a 2006 Varnado High School graduate, made two tackles in the game and one was on special teams.
The victory put the Lions at 2-2 this season. Winnipeg fell to 2-3.
B.C. and Winnipeg are both in the West Division. B.C. is in first place and Winnipeg is in fifth. Calgary leads the division with a 4-0 record.
B.C. hits the road this week and faces Ottawa. Ottawa is in first place of the East Division and enters with a 2-2 record.
