A Bogalusa man who is the suspect in a recent shooting was arrested Tuesday, after police officers took him into custody in New Orleans, according to Maj. Percy Knight of the Bogalusa Police Department.

Knight said that the BPD received a call on Monday, Sept. 10, at 11:19 p.m., referencing a person being shot in the parking lot of the Power Food Store, located at 1005 Sullivan Drive in Bogalusa.

Upon arrival of the BPD officers, a male victim was located with a single gunshot wound to his lower back, Knight said. The shooter had fled the scene. The victim was transported by ambulance to North Oaks Hospital in Hammond.

Knight said that a witness on the scene identified the shooter as Charles L. Smoot Jr., 36, of Bogalusa. BPD officers reviewed the store’s video surveillance footage. The video footage showed the victim having a confrontation with Smoot, who was recognized by the BPD officers, Knight said. A warrant was issued for Smoot’s arrest.

“The BPD Detective Division received information that Smoot was in New Orleans,” Knight said. “On Tuesday, Sept. 18, officers from the BPD Detective Division drove to New Orleans and found that Smoot was staying in a hotel in the Warehouse District.

“The New Orleans Police Department SWAT team responded to the hotel and located the room where Smoot was staying. Smoot was taken into custody without incident and transported to Central Lock Up in New Orleans for booking.”

Knight said that Smoot was transported to the Bogalusa City Jail on Wednesday. There, he was booked on the felony warrant for the charges of attempted second degree murder, possession or carrying a weapon by a convicted felon, illegal use of weapons or dangerous instruments, illegal carrying of weapons and aggravated battery.

Smoot was also arrested for an active attachment for failure to appear in the Bogalusa City Court, Knight said.
