Jamyra Magee

Varnado senior Jamyra Magee plays volleyball for the Lady Cats. Magee is an outside hitter for Varnado and is a three-year starter.
Varnado coach Kelly Gifford said Magee is always a pleasure and is someone that can make people smile and bring their spirits up, but also someone that is receptive to what you have to say as a coach or even to her other teammates.
“She’s also one of those empathetic people,” Gifford said. “If there’s a need or something or they make a mistake, Jamyra is really good at talking to them in a way that’s constructive and also encouraging them. I really take notice to that. She’s also one of those people that she just enjoys being out there and being in the game and being with her friends, but she’s also serious too. She gets on the court and she knows when to be serious and be in the game. When she gets out there, she knows it’s time to play and it’s a time to stay focused and she communicates really well.”

What do you enjoy most about playing your sports? Why?
It gives you time to bond with other people other than just doing school work all of the time and it takes your mind off of so much core work.

What do you like best about being a student athlete?
You can set examples for younger students, but it’s also something, because to be in extra sports you have to have a certain GPA and stuff. It just sets certain standards for other students.

Who has been the most influential person in your school sports career? Why?
My brother (former Varnado athlete Jadarrell Magee) because he always wanted to be running back, but he was always overweight, so he could never run the ball. He lost like 100 pounds over a summer and he started and he was actually really good last year.
(Magee was a second-team all-district player last year in football and finished second in the Division V state powerlifting meet for the 220-pound weight class).

Who is your favorite athlete? Why?
New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees because he plays for the Saints.

Favorite team?
New Orleans Saints.

Best thing about living in Washington Parish?
The community is so small and everybody knows everybody.

What do you like best about the Washington Parish Free Fair?
It’s free and it’s something different because where we live around here, we don’t have too much, so it’s something you can enjoy once a year.
