A Bogalusa High School graduate has been inducted into the Nicholls State University Athletics Hall of Fame.
The late Terry Magee, who is a 1972 Bogalusa High School graduate, is one of the five newest members of the Nicholls State University Hall of Fame.
He was inducted on Saturday, Nov. 10, at a ceremony and the group was honored on the field between the first and second quarter of the game that day against Stephen F. Austin.
Magee’s brother Glynn gave the induction speech on behalf of Magee. Glynn was joined on stage by Terry and Susan Magee’s daughter Molly Magee, and their son Dustin Magee.
Susan Magee is Terry’s widow.
When they went on the field, they brought the family’s grandchildren, and Dustin’s wife Kelli Magee.
Magee passed away in 1999 at age 44.
“I am grateful to the Hall of Fame Selection committee for recognizing Terry’s contribution to the development of the football program at Nicholls,” Susan Magee said.
Susan Magee said the induction was very nice.
“It was in a beautiful theatre at the Talbot Hall (on the Nicholls Campus),” she said. “There were a lot of hall of fame inductees and those who had already been inducted in attendance and a lot of family members for the inductees. It was very nice. The reception area was set up very nice and then we went in and found our seats and all of the honorees were given time to give an acceptance speech.”
Magee played for the Colonels from 1972-1975. He was a punter and place kicker and had time at wide receiver.
At punter, he averaged 41 yards per attempt with his best average of 42.2 in his senior year.
At place kicker, Magee made 10 field goals and 31 extra points.
Magee caught 25 passes for 348 yards and two touchdowns at receiver.
He was a 1975 Louisiana Sports Writers’ Association All-Louisiana team selection.
Magee is one of two Nicholls State players to play in the Senior Bowl that takes place each year in Mobile, Ala. Gary Barbaro was the other. Also in the family, Molly Magee selected as an All-American Cheerleader by the Universal Cheerleaders Association and got to cheerlead at the 1996 Senior Bowl.
“(Terry) was there the second year Nicholls had football,” Susan Magee said. “He was instrumental in helping them build football. They were Gulf South champion in 1975. They started the program in 1971. We have lifelong friends. I saw people I haven’t seen in 40-plus years. I was able to greet Terry’s head coach (Bill Clements) from the last couple of years he was there. He was the one who nominated Terry for the hall of fame induction. They honored all of the football players in attendance he coached at Nicholls. They called them Clements’ Colonels.”
Terry Magee lived in Bogalusa his entire life, except during his football career.
Following his career, Magee came back to Bogalusa and was heavily involved in little league sports, coaching and officiating in Washington Parish.
Magee is in the United States Specialty Sports Association and the Amateur Softball Association Halls of Fame.
