Varnado High School has named Milton Green as the Wildcats new football coach.
“I am thrilled to join the great state of Louisiana and the Varnado Wildcats,” Green said. “More than anyone, I understand what a privilege it is to be a part of an emerging high school football program in Louisiana. The passion I am bringing to this new role is incomparable, and I look forward to working with the players, coaches, and the entire Wildcats community to aid in building a tradition of excellence and pride.”
Green has been coaching for 12 years as offensive and defensive coordinators.
Most recently, Green spent the last three seasons at Vicksburg High School in Mississippi — a Class 6A program. Last year, they had a top-three defense in terms of points allowed and topped the state in points scored defensively. They had an interception return for a touchdown in six straight games.
Green’s motto is Mental Toughness and Extra Effort (MTXE).
“The mental toughness is the attitude,” Green said. “Your emotions carry through in everything you do on the field, in the classroom and at home. If you put any effort into it, you’re going to get results. If you put extra effort into it, you get state championship results and we’re in a state championship district.”
Green said his vision of the program is to raise the standards to Class 2A.
“We’re going to raise the standards because we’re in a different district,” Green said. “We’re going to act and play like Amite, Kentwood and St. Helena. We’ve also got Pine in our district and that’s a crosstown rivalry. Independence is another team. We will have them for homecoming and they have great traditional football. This district is one of the toughest in Class 2A. They are like a baby SEC. The main thing is the pride, discipline, dedication and commitment on and off the field.”
Green said it will be a process.
“We’re going to be building around our ninth graders, but our seniors are going to set the standards of excellence,” Green said.
Varnado principal Jennifer Beninato said they are very excited to have coach Green.
“I feel like he’s the perfect fit for this school and the football program,” Beninato said. “We’ve been communicating almost daily, planning his transition to Varnado High School. With coach Green’s passion for football and his eagerness for student success, he will be the driving force that brings back Wildcat pride to our school and our community.”
On Tuesday, April 9 at 6 p.m., Varnado is holding a meet-and-greet where students, parents and the community will have an opportunity to meet Green. The event takes place in the school’s gym.
