Varnado High School’s Quincy James
Quincy James is a senior at Varnado High School. James is a track and field athlete.
This year, James competed in the high jump, the 400 meters, the long jump and the 4×200 relay.
On Friday, James will compete in the Class 1A state meet in the high jump and 400 meters at LSU’s Bernie Moore Stadium. In order to qualify for state, athletes have to come in the top four at their district meet to advance to regionals and then finish in the top three at regionals to get to state.
Varnado coach Cashanda Nichols said that James is definitely a self-motivator.
“It does not take much to push him,” Nichols said. “When he has a goal, he tries to strive for that goal. He tries to pull everything out of him in order to make his goal to become possible. I’ve taught Quincy I think as early as third grade, so I’ve kind of had him off-and-on through the years, so it’s just amazing to see the athlete he’s become and the person he’s become. He’s always had the same demeanor as far as being responsible, being committed to his work. He’s an all-around awesome kid.”
What do you enjoy most about playing your sport?
I like the excitement, like how my teammates cheer for me when I run. It gives me that extra energy, that boost to go to push myself to keep going.
What do you like best about being a student athlete?
I just like the energy the school gives you. Like when you come back to school, it’s nice to hear your name on the intercom. I just love the energy the school gives you.
Who has been the most influential person in your school sports career? Why?
My Uncle Jesse (James). He disciplines me. Every time I tell him my result and stuff, he knows I can do better. He just has the faith in me like, ‘come on Quincy, you know you can do better than this.’ So, he just pushes me. He tells me, ‘you should get out there and run, run more, push yourself.’ And I continue to do that everyday.
Who is your favorite athlete? Why?
Olympic runner Usain Bolt. He has that determination to win, and then when he smiles, he’s letting you know, ‘I got this. I’m about to win.’ I love that smile he’s giving.
Favorite team?
Chicago Bulls.
Best thing about living in Washington Parish?
The community. I love the people out here. They give so much love and support in the community. Even during school and stuff, my whole community tries to help me go off to college.
