Washington Parish President Richard “Ned” Thomas issued a statement Tuesday, concerning the recent developments with COVID-19 in the parish.

The statement read:

“This morning, March, 17, 2020, my office was notified of its first COVID-19 positive test of a resident of Washington Parish who is at a hospital in St Tammany Parish. After receiving that notification, I held a conference call with elected officials and stakeholders in Washington Parish.

“As stated in my memo that was issued on March 16, 2020, I urge all citizens of Washington Parish to do their part to minimize the spread of any virus. We must all take action and be vigilant. Wash your hands often for at least 20 seconds, cover your cough, stay away from sick people and more importantly stay home if you are sick.

“It is extra important for everyone to take actions to reduce the risk of getting sick, by practicing social distancing and unnecessary travel. Information on this virus, and its impacts to not only our parish but the state, is changing hourly. We ask that you continue to watch local media, check in on the elderly and those individuals you know have underlying health conditions, preferable by phone, as they are the ones that are most susceptible to the virus.
