Pine’s Raiders take to the road Thursday for their spring game to face host Jewel Sumner with things set to get under way at 5:30 p.m.
The spring game begins with the freshman taking the field. Pine’s offense will go for 10 plays against Jewel Sumner’s defense.
The Raiders’ defense will be next, facing Sumner’s offense for 10 plays.
The starters then go out there for 12 plays, beginning with Pine’s offense, followed by the defensive unit.
The second-stringers will then have their opportunity for 12 plays, starting with Pine’s offense.
The starters return for 12 more plays, as Pine’s offense starts off once again, battling the Cowboys’ defense.
Following a break, the teams will go into a game situation, as each team will get two series.
Sumner’s offense will go first.
Pine coach Bradley Seal talked about some of the things he’s looking to take out of the spring game.
“We just want to look crisp as far as lining up right on defense, knowing our assignments and tackling,” Seal said. “Offensively, we want to minimize the penalties and turnovers.”
Seal said one of the things the spring game does is allow coaches to see their players facing difference competition.
“You can only see so much during practice,” Seal said. The kids have to be out there on their own without a coach correcting everything play-to-play. We haven’t had our ones go against our ones very much, so this will be good challenge for them now.”
When asked about the practices, Seal said he’s pleased with where the team is right now.
“I think our passing game has looked a little ahead of schedule,” Seal said. “We felt going into the spring that we’ve got a good running game, so we wanted to see what our passing game looks like. Defensively, I’ve been very pleased with the way they’ve performed in the spring.”
Pine put a playoff-winning season together last year.
The 15th-seeded Raiders made it to the regional round of the Class 2A state playoffs after defeating No. 18 St. Helena College & Career Academy, 28-20, in the opening round of rhe postseason.
It was the first playoff win in Pine’s football history.
Pine lost in the regional round to second-seeded and eventual state runner up, Kinder, 37-6.
